Real Life Ma+h …
North Coast Education's Real Life Math is a multi-sensory, systematic mathematics program. It is successful one-on-one, in small groups, and in entire classrooms. Students successfully improve problem-solving skills and computation skills.
Real Life Math uses:
- Multi-Sensory Learning - teaches concepts through the eyes (visual), ears (auditory), touch (tactile), and muscle movement (kinesthetic).
- Systematic Learning - teaches concepts in an organized, step-by-step approach starting with the simple and moving to the complex.
The NCES multi-sensory, systematic approach has proven extremely effective with leaning disabled, cognitive delayed, Asperger's, and other struggling learners.
Problem-Solving Skills
The importance of problem-solving is best described by this quote from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, "Knowing mathematics means being able to use it in purposeful ways. To learn mathematics, students must be engaged in exploring, conjecturing, and thinking rather than only in rote learning of rules and procedures."
NCES utilizes Math Solutions by Marilyn Burns to provide problem-solving activities.
Computation Skills
To develop computation skills, NCES utilizes the TouchMath® method. TouchMath simplifies and clarifies all areas of computation, develops left/right directionality, reduces number reversal, reinforces number value, eliminates guess work and helps develop positive self-image. This powerful teaching strategy supplements any textbook series.
TouchMath has proven successful helping students learn and retain basic math facts because it appeals to all three types of learners - visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic.
TouchMath systematically teaches counting and math facts; and teaches addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division computation skills.
