RICHARDS LEARNING SYSTEMS ® PHONICS WORKSHOP:
OCTOBER 8TH & 9TH FROM 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
OCTOBER 10TH FROM 5:00 – 9:00 PM
Educators make a lasting impression on the world, one student at a time. They share insight, philosophy, teachings, and open the doors to endless possibilities. They inspire others to do tremendous things and to see the world in a whole new light. Educators are irreplaceable.
Reading is a fundamental skill that is necessary for day-to-day living. Think about all of the things you read on a daily basis: traffic signs, prescription bottles, nutritional facts, blog posts — like this one! If you did not know how to read, think about how difficult it would be to complete your every day tasks. Things that you take for granted, like the ability to read a menu, would become much more challenging.
Reading is a crisis in this country. A 2013 article by the Huffington Post stated “The U.S. Illiteracy Rate Hasn’t Changed In 10 Years”. The article cites a study from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, stating that 14% of the U.S. population is unable to read. In this day and age, it’s hard to believe that is still even possible.
But there’s hope!
Carole Richards, founder and executive director of North Coast Education Services, is also the creator of Richards Learning Systems ®®. Her Richards Learning Systems ® program is an award-winning, multi-sensory reading curriculum. This innovative program teaches students of all ages how to read by incorporating gross body movement, memorable characters, simple explanations, and a systematic learning plan. By using a hands-on approach, students are able to retain knowledge easier and have fun in the process. Richards Learning Systems ® works!
The Creative Education Institute is currently partnering with Eric Gordon, the CEO of the Cleveland Municipal School District, to bring Richards Learning Systems ® into their classrooms. In a first-of-its-kind approach to learning, short video segments will train the teachers at the same time the students learn the material. Teachers will turn off the videos and practice with manipulatives, then play the next segment. This unique approach will cut costs of teacher training. Plus, it features effective and award-winning curriculum.
Next month, North Coast Education Services will be offering workshops to those wishing to teach the Richards Learning Systems ® curriculum. Think of the impact you could make teaching others to read!
The Richards Learning Systems ® Systematic Phonics workshop will take place Saturday, October 8th through Monday, October 10th (full days on the weekend and Monday evening). Participants will learn how to teach basic phonics skills including word attack, letter sounds, syllables and more. Both the Richards Learning Systems ® Phonics and Linguistics programs will be taught. Those who attend will receive teacher’s guides and manipulatives to teach both programs.
In addition to learning how to teaching phonics, participants will also learn how to read and interpret an Evaluation Team Report (ETR). This skill is relatively unknown to parents and to some teachers.
