FICTION COMPREHENSION

Richards Learning Systems ® Fiction learners develop an understanding of the framework or skeletal structure of fiction. Simple and complex fiction becomes meaningful to students. The learner travels step-by-step through the structure of literature and gains the ability to identify:

Primary Fiction Comprehension Workbook

This is designed for children in kindergarten through grade two or three, depending on their skill and ability levels. Students learn setting, characters and the story’s problem.

Advanced Fiction Comprehension Workbook

This is designed for students ages eight or nine through college. Students learn the basic story structure and then move into interpretive theme, characterization, genre, etc.

Systematic Fiction Comprehension Teacher’s Guide

This textbook guides the teacher/tutor in instructing students on the structure of their written textbooks, articles, etc. There are multiple lessons with graphic organizers and exercises to practice the concepts taught within the curriculum. However, the major focus is using the student’s school work to teach the concepts.

Nonfiction Comprehension

Richards Learning Systems ® Nonfiction teaches outlining, or main idea identification, in reverse. Students learn to extract pieces of information from material, identify their relationship to each other, and relate them to the main idea of the subject material. Learning this skill requires:

  • Subject identification
  • Title/subject connection
  • Main idea/supporting detail connection

Students also learn how to apply these techniques to improve their test-taking skills.

Nonfiction Comprehension Primary Workbook

This is designed for children in kindergarten through grade two or three, depending on the student’s skill and ability level. Students learn subject, title, main ideas in paragraphs, and short texts using graphic organizers.

Nonfiction Comprehension Advanced Workbook

This is designed for student ages eight or nine through college. Students learn how to ask questions, subject-title connection, main ideas in paragraphs, articles and textbooks, supporting details, sub-details, notetaking, test taking, and more using graphic organizers.
