Summer Reading Tip #3 — Current Events!

When it comes to older students, sometimes fiction books are not enough.  There comes an age when some students outgrow stories of superheroes, princesses, and magical lands.  As students become disinterested in these topics, it can sometimes become difficult to find new things that capture their interest.

Here’s a simple solution – check out current events!

The world is its own fascinating story.  Whether we realize it or not, we are creating history every minute of every single day.  With billions of people all over the world, there is always something interesting in the works.

Kristin of One Stop Teacher Stop created a list of online resources for non-fiction materials.  Spend an afternoon with your student showing them these websites and let them decide what they’d like to read.  Once you find one article that appeals to them, it will easier to find more books and readings on the subject.  You can even find works of fiction, or the reading might inspire them to write their own story!
