State of Ohio Increases Autism & Jon Peterson Scholarships!

July 9, 2021

The budget increasing the Autism Scholarship and Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship each to $32,445

North Coast Tutoring Services engaged Brian Durdle, a Baker Hostetler lobbyist, in our efforts to make this happen. He is tremendous at building relationships and maneuvering through the political arena. We are grateful for his wisdom and efforts in accomplishing the scholarship increases.

In addition to North Coast Tutoring Services, Galvin Therapy Center, Cleveland Clinic Autism Center and Steps Autism Center supported our lobbying efforts. After we started our effort we gained momentum and eventually were joined by other forces such as School Choice Ohio.

Senator Bacon is a champion of the special needs scholarships and we greatly appreciate all of his continued support. We also need to express our gratitude to Governor Kasich, Speaker Rosenberger and Senate President Keith Faber. Without their support of Senator Bacon’s efforts the increase would not have been approved.

All Autism Scholarship awards are now $32,445 per year per child. New award amounts for the Jon Peterson scholarship were just announced and they are as follows:

  • Category 1 Speech or Language Impairment $9,585
  • Category 2 Specific Learning Disability, Intellectual Disability or OHI-minor $12,470
  • Category 3 Hearing Impaired or Emotional Disturbance $19,150
  • Category 4 Vision Impaired or OHI-major $22,977
  • Category 5 Orthopedic Impairment or Multi-handicapped $28,387
  • Category 6 Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Hearing and Vision Impaired $32,445

*Scholarship amounts are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the Ohio Department of Education. Check the ODE website for the most accurate scholarship amounts.

Or, if you’d rather, subscribe to our blog on the sidebar and have the next post delivered right to your inbox. Happy reading! Preparing for testing season is enough to make anybody nervous. Whether you are a teacher, a parent, or a students, there are bound to be some butterflies when you hear acronyms like SAT, ACT, PRAXIS, PARCC, OAA, etc. Generally, a little bit of nervousness is good – it is your body’s way of telling you that this is important to you and you want to succeed.
