TUTOR SPOTLIGHT — JEFFREY

February 27, 2017
Jeffrey

“Teaching/mentoring is a passion that I have.

I want to support our youth like I have been supported

throughout my academic career.”

— Jeffrey

For many of our students, a tutor isn’t just a mentor. In time, the tutor becomes a friend and – in some cases – like family. When Jeffrey first came to North Coast Education Services, we knew he was special. We knew he would connect well with our students.

Born and raised in Cleveland, OH, Jeffrey now calls the west side home. He attended college in New York and graduated with a degree in history. He later returned to Cleveland State University and earned his M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction.

Jeffrey has been a classroom teacher for 17 years and is also a credentialed intervention specialist. In addition to working in schools, he also worked with at-risk youth for the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

“MY FAVORITE CLASS”

Reflecting back on his time as a teacher, Jeffrey has fond memories of his very first class – 37 fifth grade students. “My favorite class of all time,” he said with a smile. “My students and I grew to appreciate each other and our differences.”

In 2007, Jeffrey was encouraged by a friend to become a tutor. “I wanted to continue to help students achieve and become successful.” Six years later, Jeffrey started to work for North Coast Education Services. The next year, he was presented with our Tutor of the Year award.

Jeffrey has a very strong relationship with the NCES office staff. According to Jeffrey, one of his favorite things about working for North Coast is “the support that I receive from the staff.”

A DEDICATED ROLE MODEL OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM

A father of two grown children, Jeffrey has been an avid mentor and athlete for years. He played on his college’s basketball team was honored as the Team MVP. Now he is a dedicated sports coach, as well as a volunteer mentor for young inner city men. Standing at 6’6”, Jeffrey’s stature can be a little intimidating, but his disposition and smile are the source of encouragement for dozens of students. Thank you, Jeffrey, for all that you do!

Whether you are a teacher, a parent, or a students, there are bound to be some butterflies when you hear acronyms like SAT, ACT, PRAXIS, PARCC, OAA, etc. Generally, a little bit of nervousness is good – it is your body’s way of telling you that this is important to you and you want to succeed.
